John Jones

Music Director (1992 - 1995)

Was Program Director at CKLN , then CHFI before coming to CFNY.  Replaced as Music Director by Kneale Mann in 1995 when Kneale came back to CFNY. Went to MuchMusic where he worked as a music director. His wife Kathleen Rajsp was with the CITY TV news department. Both have now moved to Florida (Fall 2000).

Alan Cross says:

"Now one of the 'almost big wigs' at MuchMusic. Head guy when it comes to which videos get added (his wife is Rapidfax host Kathleen Rajsp)"

John writes (February, 2003):

A brief update on the past few years of my life. I left CFNY in '95, when I was hired by MuchMusic. Had a great time at Much, with a creative and intelligent group of individuals, made some fun tv, had a huge impact on music in Canada, launched MuchMoreMusic and prepared the groundwork for MuchLoud and MuchVibe. Left Much in April 2000, when I was hired by Viacom as the VP of Programming for The Box in Miami Beach. I was then hired to head up programming for an Interactive Television music network in New York, and in October 2001, left that to oversee and develop Programming, Content Acquisitions, Music Publishing and Label Relations for MusicNet, an online music subscription service owned by AOLTW, BMG, EMI and RealNetworks, also based in New York. We still have our home in Miami, where I spend weekends, and I commute to New York and back every week.

I grew up on radio... listening to David Marsden, Reiner Schwartz, Jim Bauer, and David Pritchard on CHUM-FM, before the inception of CFNY. But The Spirit Of Radio had a phenomenal influence on me musically, and subsequently, on my career. CFNY was the reason to want to work in radio, and the ultimate destination for anyone passionate about the medium. And while everyone moves on, there are two events that remain among the most resonant in my career. First, the day that I was hired at CFNY and second, shortly afterward, when I received a letter at CFNY from David Marsden while he was at COAST 800, congratulating me on joining one North America's two greatest radio stations.

Like John Jones I grew up listening to Reiner Schwartz and David Pritchard (R.I.P.) in the late 60s, before the age of 10, on Chum-FM (filled cassette after cassette); then the same habit continued listening mostly to Brad McNally on CFNY, but also to his contemporaries at the station. I really enjoyed The Great Ontario Talent Search! It was John Jones who opened the door for me to express my foreground radio and open format ideas at CKLN, just before it went on air in the fall of '82. My main program, 'Bridges Over Borders' was an ethnographic study of mostly tribal and primal folk recordings and culture; inspired by Peter Gabriel's WOMAD project, and other sources. From Michael Brook, Jon Hassell and Brian Eno interviews to meeting with revolutionaries and artists like King Sunny Ade, I owe it all to John's faith in allowing me to experiment with that show and with a late Sunday night ambient, electronic show called 'Lume'; largely inspired by McNally's Eclectic Spirit.
